Air Injection Pipe

A car or truck’s air injection system is specifically designed to produce cleaner air emissions. Exhaust gas from a vehicle is very hot when it leaves the combustion chamber. By introducing air or oxygen into the exhaust system as the gases leave the chambers, the fuels continue to burn as they leave the system. This creates cleaner air that is produced from the exhaust system or tailpipe of the vehicle.

There are two different types of air injection systems currently used in vehicles. A pump type typically includes an air or smog pump that supplies the fresh oxygen to the exhaust gases through the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. This system includes an air pump, diverter valve and the air distribution manifold as well as an air check valve. The second type is known as a pulse type and includes an air injection pipe that is typically one inch round and sits around the air cleaner that leads to the metal air check valve. This is a much simpler system to use and relies basically on a vacuum that is created in the vehicle’s exhaust stream. This vacuum is created as the exhaust travels down the manifold. When the engine of the vehicle cycles the vacuum will draw fresh oxygen from the outside of the vehicle into the air injection pipe. This air will then be used to make the fuel gases or exhaust fumes burn longer and much more thoroughly before being emitted into the air. The entire pulse type of air injection systems includes only the air injection pipe, the metal air check valve and the exhaust manifold. It is a much easier system to maintain as well as to replace or repair when needed. The fresh air that is drawn into the air injection pipe travels down through the diverter and check valves and into the manifold before it is released.

Replacing the air injection pipe should be fairly easy depending on your specific vehicle. These pipes or hoses can be purchased at most automotive parts stores and several online retailers. Be certain that you choose the correct make and model of your vehicle in order to receive the proper pipe. You will need the correct tools for the job as well. To begin, you will need to ensure that your car or truck’s engine is completely cooled. Attempting to replace anything under the hood of your vehicle when the engine is hot could lead to serious burns and injuries. Once the engine has cooled, you will need to remove the old air injection pipe. You may also want to remove the battery cables to prevent shocks. If your car or truck has a mass air flow sensor, you will want to disconnect it.

Most agree that it is a good idea to also replace the air filter when replacing the air injection pipe. This simply ensures that your air flow is in perfect condition once your vehicle has been repaired. When you have replaced the air filter and removed the old injection pipe, simply install the new one. Make note of anything that you need to disconnect or remove so that you can be sure to properly reconnect all parts when you are finished installing the pipe. Once you have reconnected your battery terminal, turn the engine over to ensure that it is operating correctly. Listen carefully for any rattling that could be caused by the air injection pipe being too loose. If this is the case you will need to retighten the pipe to ensure proper operation of the air injection system.

Keeping your air injection system in good operating condition is crucial for the overall operation of your vehicle. If you notice a problem with how your car or truck is running, the air injection pipe may be the problem. If you are unfamiliar with your vehicle’s engine or typically do not do your own automotive repairs, you should take the vehicle to a repair shop to ensure that the injection is always in good working order.
