Drive Shaft Yoke

Drive shaft is a mechanical constituent element which conducts torque and rotation for a driveline - that cannot conduct immediately due to distance, which ultimately disables them to operate their conditioned movements.

Drive shaft which conducts the gearbox to a rear differential is called the Propeller shaft, largely applicable for four wheelers. The Propeller shaft conducts the drive force produced from the engine to the axles. Half shaft is in fact two shafts which joins the rear differential to the rear wheel.

Large heavy cars required drive shafts to front axle which were distinctly smaller and seamlessly integrated, causing engineering difficulties to construct a reliable drive shaft. Most modern light cars - the all-wheel drive operates a set up that resembles the front wheel drive’s strategy. The front axle’s transmission and final drive for the front axle are compounded in one housing beside the engine. Then a single drive shaft goes up to the axle.

Drive shafts are used in bicycles as well, posing some consequential advantages and disadvantages. The Advantages:

  • Chains could be covered with metal or plastics which would give the advantage that could be experienced using a drive shaft
  • Drive shaft makes it more complicated to remove wheels.

Drive shafts needs to be replaced. Although the drive shaft is easily repairable, it is often recommended to replace it entirely. One of the most crucial components of the drive shaft system – the drive shaft yoke has to be carefully maintained in order to ensure a longer lifespan of the performance of the drive shaft. The Drive shaft yoke is also the most vulnerable component, and one that is most commonly damaged of the drive shaft system. Oftentimes, the drive shaft yoke causes the entire drive shaft to be replaced.

How to replace a drive shaft:

1. Lift the car with a jack stand or support it on a ramp that the bottom of the car could be reached easily. Take guidance instructed by the manufacturer for the contraption. Set the gear on neutral.

2. For ensuring the same position of the new drive shaft trace the edge of the drive shaft at the yoke, make sure to put the manual car in gear for avoiding shifting or turnings of the drive shaft while unbolting or stable the car by putting it on emergency brake.

3. Unbolt the rear yoke. The bolts could be remove one by one and changing the position of the rear ok by turning the emergency gear. It could be repeated until all four bolts are removed. To pry the drive shaft crowbars could be used.

4. Drive shaft has to be cut of from the transmission. Without damaging the seals pull the drive shaft toward the rear of the car.

5. Continue to place the new drive shaft in the reverse method. Rotate until it fits into the place perfectly.
